I found this site on Alltop. When I clicked through, I was pleasantly surprised to find a local person (I'm in Rogersville) writing about local journalism. I'm enjoying the articles and find them very encouraging.

I have a few websites about niche topics that I make a side income from, and I've been thinking about starting a local website, probably something akin to a small town paper or maybe an Ozarks travel site. I don't know.

It's exciting to see your sports site doing so well. The readers seem very supportive, and it's obvious you are providing value to your community.

I subscribed to the RSS feed for JournaMarketing and look forward to reading more.

ReadWriteWeb just began writing about QR Codes. Linking to a special promotion off Facebook works best if you go through WildFire App (http://www.wildfireapp.com) or make your own seperate mobile page with a "like" button embedded into it because otherwise it is messy, requiring the user to login.

I also noticed that when you accessed the page via mobile on my blackberry, the "like" button was non-existant- as if HTML5 couldn't support that functionality.

So the way around that is to build a custom mobile page with a "like" button that links to your facebook fan page.

Here is an example of what you can do: http://mcloughlin.ca/insights/promo-products-qr-codes-facebook-likes/

Or this: http://www.buzzitag.com/watch-demo

You see, it has to be simple right now with Facebook, there has to be pretty much just a "button" for optional loyalty.

The "mandatory liking" when you enter a promotion only occurs through WildFire App and the traditional Internet, not the mobile Internet as of right now- WildFire is working on ways to solve this.

E-mail me at dan@mcloughlin.ca if you'd like more information!

Yeah, I'm intrigued by the idea of Patch -- but I'm just not sure it can work on a large enough scale to please a huge Web company. Can one person make a living doing this? Sure, I think so. But that person has to be a marketer in addition to a journalist. And that's not the most common combination of traits.

Thanks for the comment. It's the first one I've ever received from a ferret.

I use patch occasionally, for instance, search "Patch" on Twitter, and they generally only have 45 to 50 followers. Not much of an audience. The odds of any one follower actually seeing one of their tweets and commenting on it are worse than winning the lottery twice. I do not know what kind of vetting process was employed in gathering local editors either. Most of them are non responsive, and probably have other jobs, and this is not their main gig.

Hey, just some feedback from a working class, blue collar ferret. I Tweet at Samuel_Clemons

Facebook and Twitter should be an integral part of any business or nonprofit. Period.

It amazes me how many in businesses and service agencies don't use ANY social media. Hopefully developments like this will make it more appealing.

You raise some good points here. Especially with the link to the humble radio with only 5 presets.

The value of the iPhone only became to the fore with the launch of the App Store. I don't think we've touched the sides of what these new machines will do.
