How to use social media correctly...
I've installed a search widget called Lijit on the right column of this page. It helps visitors by allowing them to search all the stuff I've posted here. And it helps me by tracking what search terms are bringing people to the site. It was also easy to install.
But here's what impresses me most: after installing the widget, I got an email from Tara Anderson, the "Lijit evangelist." She thanked me for signing up, and asked if I had any feedback on the functionality or setup. Even if this is a boilerplate email, Tara had still taken time to visit my blog and send me a note.
Because of that effort, I'm blogging about Lijit, rather than simply using the tool in my sidebar. That's how word-of-mouth works on the Web. And most importantly, it's the kind of thing you can do for your own organization easily, by keeping up with what others are saying about you and reaching out to them.
David, you make me blush. Thanks for the kind words and for giving us a try. It's an exciting time to be a technology evangelist at Lijit and I'm having fun figuring out how best to get the word out. I appreciate your vote of confidence and enjoy learning from all the great knowledge that you share on your blog.

See, everyone? THIS is how you take advantage of social media for your organization!
Thanks, Tara -- you're doing great work.
